Activemenus makes the standard Drupal navigation menu expandable. Clickable, highlighted regions are added to the menu. When a collapsed menu item is expanded, the child menu items are loaded dynamically through AJAX.

version 2

This version allows to choose the menus on which the AJAX behavior should be activated and supports horizontal menus.

As of 15 Mar 2014:

Maintenance status: Minimally maintained
Development status: Under active development
Reported installs: 842 sites currently report using this module.
Downloads: 12,230

I used to use this a bit with Drupal6, however for version Activemenu 7.x-2.x-dev (2013-Sep-30) against Drupal7 I get an error:

Warning: file_get_contents(sites/all/modules/activemenu/jstools.js) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in drupal_build_js_cache() (line 4943 of .../includes/common.inc).

This may (if you can get it to work with Drupal7) be a better alternative to JQuery menu or DHTML Menu if you have a very deep Book menu block structure and/or when you have menu blocks subject to access permissions (thus preventing block caching).

It is important to note that as of version 2 one can 'choose the menus on which the AJAX behavior should be activated', so it can now be applied to all menus, even the Book menu, not just the user's Navigation menu.

It is not nearly as popular as JQuery menu and is only minimally maintained.
